Edinburgh’s first Food Growing Strategy, Growing Locally, has just been launched. The Strategy was developed following a citywide consultation and in collaboration with Edible Edinburgh.
It has three aims:
- To encourage food growing through creating more land for growing and encouraging more people to get involved in food growing in the city
- To encourage people to buy and eat more locally grown sustainable food
- To improve awareness of and engagement in sustainable food across the city
The Food Growing Strategy promotes the benefits of growing to health and well-being, and encouraging growing in ways that help encourage biodiversity.
It is part of the Council’s broader approach to a green recovery from the coronavirus pandemic and meeting the key priorities of tackling poverty, achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2030 and working towards a fairer, more inclusive city.
As part of the Strategy, a map has been developed of food growing sites and projects in Edinburgh. We hope to develop this map going forward, capturing as much if not all food growing activity in the city!
