Fizz Free February is coming to Edinburgh for the first time, will you be making the pledge to #gofizzfree? Friday 1 February marks the start of Fizz Free February meaning it’s time to ditch sugary drinks for 28 days. Launched by Southwark Council in 2018, as part of the wider Sustainable Food Cities Sugar Smart campaign, Fizz Free February is a great way to reduce your sugar intake by cutting out fizzy drinks. By going fizz free for all of February, it can help you on your way to drinking less sugary drinks for the rest of the year too. Through this campaign, Edible Edinburgh partners, Edinburgh Community Food, aims to raise awareness of the health implications of drinking fizzy drinks which often contain high amounts of sugar. Latest data from the Scottish Health Survey on the nation’s diet shows that sugar now makes up 14.4% of daily calorie intake in Scottish adults, while the official recommendation to meet the Scottish Dietary Goals is to limit added sugar to no more than 51%. The campaign is part of the ongoing work Edinburgh Community Food are undertaking after receiving the Scottish Government’s Oral Health Community Challenge Fund, to support families in the local community with oral health advice. To join in, just pledge to give up fizzy drinks for 28-days and tweet us using #gofizzfree. You can also take part by signing up on the Edinburgh Community Food website here.
